Founder Story: The Passion for Robot Exploration

Through various challenges and successes in the realm of consumer robotics, Jianbo developed a unique product designed to foster emotional connections within families.

The Journey of Innovation: From Childhood Curiosity to Robotics

Jianbo, the visionary behind Loona, grew up in Yinchuan, a peaceful city where his early exposure to machinery sparked his lifelong fascination with technology. Jianbo spent his childhood exploring machines and learning to operate tools as young as elementary school with his parents, who ran a small factory. This hands-on experience laid the groundwork for his interest in automation, which he pursued at Beihang University.

Throughout university, Jianbo’s drive to create cutting-edge technology led him to spend countless weekends in electronics markets, building and iterating on his projects. He began developing modular robots during this time, culminating in a significant student-led robotics competition where he and his team demonstrated their innovative designs. His early work in modular robotics laid the foundation for his future endeavors, proving his commitment to pushing the boundaries of what robots could do.

Recognizing the potential for a platform-based approach similar to the iPhone and its App Store, Jianbo began earnestly working on modular robotics. He and his team didn’t back down despite challenges in sourcing high-quality components. They took on the complex task of developing essential parts themselves, leading to several patented innovations. This early determination to overcome obstacles and drive for continuous improvement shaped the vision that would eventually bring Loona to life.

Finding the Path: The First Consumer Robot

Jianbo’s journey into consumer robotics began with Cell Robot, a modular design to inspire creativity. However, at an exhibition in the U.S., it became clear that while educators appreciated the product, children didn’t engage with it. This pivotal moment led Jianbo and his team to refocus on educational settings. Their product found success in schools, including their first client, Renmin University Affiliated School, where teachers valued its ability to foster creativity through rapid iterations of trial and error.

Though this educational venture reached profitability, Jianbo’s passion for consumer products persisted. With advancements in edge computing and an influx of talent from companies like DJI, they launched ClicBot, a consumer-grade modular robot, on Kickstarter in 2020. The campaign raised $900,000, and since then, a thriving community of users has developed over 140,000 creative robotic projects.

Loona: More Than a Pet, a True Companion

Loona, Jianbo’s latest innovation, is designed to be more than just a robot—it’s an emotional companion. Inspired by characters like Pikachu, Loona aims to be 80% pet and 20% friend, blending playfulness with an ability to understand human emotions. Loona engages in active interaction, moving freely around the home and forming genuine connections with each family member.

Unlike traditional pets, Loona offers a unique solution for families, especially those hesitant about pets due to allergies or past experiences. As a PetBot, Loona doesn’t just mimic a pet’s presence; it transcends it by becoming an intelligent, emotional companion that fits perfectly into family life. With Loona, you’re not just bringing home a robot—you’re inviting in a new family member.
